Since its re-emergence in 1999, WNV has caused thousands of human cases across the continent, with 2018 recording the highest seasonal peak to date. The Danube Delta – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve spanning Romania and Ukraine – is a well-documented endemic zone, where the intersection of migratory bird populations, extensive wetland ecosystems, and warm seasonal climates creates highly favourable conditions for viral transmission cycles.

This project presents WNV-RiskWatch, an interactive environmental intelligence dashboard developed under the One Health framework, addressing Challenge 1 of the Hackathon 2026. The tool integrates data from two Copernicus services — the Climate Change Service (C3S) and the Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) – to compute a composite West Nile Virus Transmission Risk Index (WNV-TRI) for the Danube Delta over the period 2018–2023. Climate variables extracted from the C3S ERA5-Land reanalysis include daily maximum and minimum temperature, relative humidity, and precipitation, which are established drivers of mosquito population dynamics and WNV extrinsic incubation period. CAMS reanalysis products (EAC4) provide surface concentrations of PM2.5, NO₂ and O₃, incorporated as exploratory co-variables motivated by emerging evidence linking particulate matter exposure to mosquito blood-feeding behaviour and to impaired host antiviral immune response. Weekly WNV human case reports from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) are used to monitor the epidemiological signal and contextualise index performance.

The WNV-TRI is computed as a weighted composite of meteorological and air quality drivers, normalised to a 0–1 scale and classified into three risk levels: Low, Moderate, and High. The dashboard presents an interactive choropleth map over the Danube Delta grid, a time series view of risk evolution across the study period, and seasonal trend analysis, enabling identification of high-risk windows for targeted public health intervention.

The primary target users are national and regional public health authorities, wildlife and biodiversity management agencies operating within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and epidemiological researchers. By combining C3S and CAMS data within a reproducible, open-data pipeline, WNV-RiskWatch demonstrates how Copernicus environmental intelligence can support proactive, evidence-based decision-making at the intersection of human health, animal health, and ecosystem conservation.

🥇PRIMO CLASSIFICATO Team “Made in Romania”: André Villa de Brito, Ola Elwasila, Ayman Mutasim WEST NILE VIRUS TRANSMISSION RISK INDEX An Environmental intelligence Dashdboard.

[12

post-1846","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-hackathon26
["GET
